Care and Hanging Advice for Paintings and Drawings
Here are a few tips and pointers for how best to look after your paintings, drawings and original art. Thank you if you’re here following a purchase of one of my pieces. I hope this article helps you protect your pictures and keep them looking their best.
WHERE TO HAND YOUR ART
Choosing where to hang a painting or, more importantly, where not to hang an artwork will help keep your art in good shape.
Avoid too much direct sunlight as this can affect colours and damage work.
Avoid rooms with moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or any spaces prone to dampness.
Avoid hanging work directly over radiators as the heat can carry dirt onto the work; you can buy radiator covers to help alleviate this.
HOW TO HANG YOUR ART
Hang paintings on strong picture hooks and avoid adhesive strips, as these often fail.
Picture hooks work well on stud walls. If the wall is solid concrete, you can use a heavy-duty picture hook screw with screw and plug or if you want to keep it simple, a flat head screw (better than countersink screws) with a large washer to stop the string from slipping off.
When marking the wall: lightly mark the height of the top of the piece by holding the piece where you want to hang it. Then measure the distance from the top of the painting to the loop or string. If the painting has a string, pull the string taught towards the top of the picture to measure the correct distance. Then, put the wall fixture the same distance as you measured beneath where you want the top of the painting.
Use a spirit level to ensure your painting is level when you hang the picture.
