Journey
Mixed media on canvas
90 × 120 cm
2025
This artwork was inspired by the journey my wife and I have been on together. The piece is a portrait of her. The eyes are the most detailed part of the work, reflecting the experience of looking someone you love in the eye, with the rest of the world melting into abstraction and emotion. The dog, in the foreground, symbolises companionship and loyalty.
The piece has a unique fabric frame made from strips of jacquard weave. The piece is intentionally left unfinished to reflect the unfinished story we are creating.
Our journey began in 2018 and has taken us through the COVID pandemic and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I would never have imagined I would live through such events, or how they would alter my outlook on life. Having a hand to hold in the darkness and someone to lean on when the path ahead seems unbearable is the most comforting feeling.
Traversing the happenings of recent years only strengthens my resolve to create art that brings people a space for joy and peace. I believe reflecting on the love and magic of life brings light and hope to a world full of growing darkness.

This piece was created using acrylic paint and charcoal on canvas. I tear up my canvases and bits of painting I make, and I stitch them together with my sewing machine. I also digitally design the sections of tapestry that are woven for me by a weaving studio in the US.
My creative process is very playful, experimental and always evolving. I take images I think look good, of things I connect with and which have some poetic symbolism. I try a lot of combinations of images, colours and text to try and find balance in a composition. Many iterations and a continuing process of creating, layering and destroying images lead to the fragmented and fractured aesthetic of my works.
