5 Things I've Learned Being an Artist

Here are a few things I have learned over the years of being a visual artist. In no particular order, these are just a few things that come to mind.

1. There's no point chasing perfection.
I always found myself disappointed with my art when I wanted it to say everything all at once, but when I realised perfect expression isn't possible, I felt liberated.

2. Routine beats inspiration every time.
Don't wait for inspiration to start making. Make time for making in the studio routinely; inspiration will come regularly.

3. Writing down your thoughts is essential.
Getting ideas out of my head helps me make sense of them and stops them from getting in the way of what I am planning to work on.

4. Make time for play.
Experiment, be curious, learn and grow. Play is part of the creative journey.

5. Your style will keep changing as you grow.
No point holding on to the past if your future is brighter and more beautiful.

I hope these help. They are things I've found useful to remind myself of at various times whilst creating art.
